Drain Fields in Georgia Soil
Your drain field — also called a leach field or field lines — is where the real work of a septic system happens. Wastewater leaves the tank and disperses through perforated lines or chambers into the soil, which filters it naturally. When the field fails, the whole system fails, no matter how healthy the tank is.
Georgia soil makes drain field design matter more than most places. The red clay common around Gainesville and the foothills drains slowly and demands proper field sizing; the soils on the Forsyth and Cherokee side vary lot to lot. That's why every job starts with understanding your soil — we coordinate perc testing, work with the county health department, and match the system type to the ground: conventional chamber fields where the soil percs well, drip or Eljen systems where it doesn't.

How do I know if my drain field is failing?
Classic signs of drain field failure are standing water or soggy ground over the field lines, sewage odors in the yard, unusually green or fast-growing grass over the field, slow drains throughout the house, and sewage backups. If wastewater surfaces in the yard, the field is no longer absorbing what the tank sends it.
Can a drain field be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
Sometimes a localized problem — a crushed line, roots, or a broken distribution box — can be repaired. But a drain field that's fully saturated or biologically clogged at the end of its life usually needs replacement, either in a new area of the yard or with a different system type suited to your soil. We evaluate the field honestly and tell you which situation you're in.
How long does a drain field replacement take?
Most residential drain field replacements take a few days once permits are in hand — including excavation, installation of the new lines or chambers, backfill, and final grading. Site conditions, soil type, and county requirements affect the timeline. We handle the whole process start to finish.
